In the heart of Portlaoise, a library has emerged that does more than house books. It is a meeting place, a learning space and a retreat for children and adults alike. A place for browsing together as well as for focused work. One roof, plenty of reasons to step inside.
MCOH Architects have given the building a clear, open form that fits into the historic town centre without trying to look older than it is. Inside, the building offers generous spatial sequences, high ceilings and ever-changing sightlines. Exposed concrete meets warm timber and bespoke joinery, with bold colours appearing here and there. Within the open spaces, smaller niches provide places to read, study or simply sit.
The lighting changes with the different spaces, too. In the entrance and reception areas, the Ringo Star G4 pendant luminaires make their presence felt with their circular form. They create a clear contrast to the straight lines of the architecture, giving the generous spaces a sense of rhythm. They provide more than just light; they also mark the areas where people arrive and cross paths.
Elsewhere, the lighting holds back. The Basic M4 luminaires almost disappear into the architecture, providing calm, uniform lighting without drawing attention to themselves. In the stairwell, the Basic A6 does the same, accompanying movement between floors. Depending on where you are in the building, the lighting takes on a different role.
Not every space is treated in the same way. Where people arrive and come together, the lighting is allowed to show itself. Elsewhere, it steps back. Sometimes the luminaire becomes part of the spatial composition; at other times, it lets the architecture take the lead.
In 2026, Portlaoise Library won "Building of the Year – Public" at the Building and Architect of the Year Awards, recognised for its clear spatial organisation, thoughtful use of materials and sensitive response to its historic surroundings. It is a public building that gives the town a new place to meet, learn and spend time.
