Retail lighting for heritage and innovation Products in the spotlight, architecture in the background

Founded in 1688, Lambertz has been shaping the tradition of Aachener Printen and fine baked specialties for more than three centuries. The Lambertz store at Aachen's Elisenbrunnen has been part of this history since 1876 and remains one of the brand's most recognisable retail locations. With its recent redesign, the store translates this heritage into a contemporary retail environment where craftsmanship, product presentation, and customer experience come together.

The interior design by BIS Architekten creates a carefully balanced setting where historical references meet contemporary retail architecture. Materials, colours, and display elements work together to communicate the brand’s identity while maintaining the flexibility required by a modern retail environment.

The lighting concept was developed to support this balance between tradition and adaptability. Throughout the store, light creates orientation, structures the different sales zones, and directs attention towards products without dominating the overall design. Seasonal displays, changing product ranges, and special presentations can be accommodated without compromising the coherence of the space.

Above the central sales counter, Ringo Star GX pendant luminaires establish a visible point of reference within the store. Their circular geometry introduces a calm visual rhythm and creates a recognisable identity for the main customer area. Rather than acting as decorative objects, the luminaires contribute to the spatial organisation of the interior and support intuitive orientation.

Throughout the store, Midpoint C7 and Midpoint P8 spotlights mounted on 3-circuit track systems provide the flexibility required for contemporary retail lighting. Products, displays, and architectural details can be illuminated precisely where attention is needed, while the adjustable positioning allows the lighting concept to evolve alongside future changes to the store layout.

The interaction of ambient illumination, focused accents, and carefully positioned focal points creates a differentiated lighting hierarchy. Customers are guided naturally through the space, while merchandise remains the visual centre of attention. Materials, textures, and packaging are rendered with clarity, supporting both product perception and the overall shopping experience.

The result is a retail environment that reflects Lambertz's long-standing heritage while meeting the demands of contemporary retail design. Through the precise interplay of architecture and light, the store offers both flexibility and visual consistency, creating a setting in which tradition and modern presentation coexist naturally.
