Light as a unifying element New work environments at Bastei Lübbe

As part of a comprehensive master plan for flexible work environments at Bastei Lübbe, brandherm + krumrey interior architecture (bki) has transformed the executive suite and the entrance area of the publishing house’s building in Cologne into a vibrant space for interaction, orientation, and a sense of belonging. Lighting solutions from Lightnet are strategically incorporated throughout, blending harmoniously into the architectural design in both the foyer and the executive suite.

Spanning approximately 490 square meters across two floors, the foyer has been transformed into a multifunctional space that naturally combines work, meetings, and relaxation.

“We were looking for a understated, flexible lighting solution with luminaires that don’t dominate the space.” Andreas Jacob, brandherm + krumrey interior architecture

In the foyer, the Lightnet series Matric, Basic, Midpoint, and Liquid Line form a cohesive lighting strategy that supports spatial clarity and atmospherically complements various usage scenarios.

The linear structures of Matric guide the eye naturally through the open space and emphasize the industrial character of the ceiling. In the hallways, Basic and the Midpoint LED spotlight system are integrated together on track systems. While Basic, with its round, harmonious form, provides uniform, calm general lighting, Midpoint, with its purist, geometric design and high-quality finish, supports clear light guidance and orientation within the space. The curved elements of the Liquid Line create a soft, flowing lighting effect in the meeting rooms and subtly structure the space.

In the executive suite as well, the lighting design was precisely tailored to the respective usage scenarios and architecturally integrated. The 160-square-meter area on the 6th floor was redesigned by Bastei Lübbe in collaboration with brandherm + krumrey interior architecture. The goal was to break down traditional office structures and enable new ways of working. The result is an open, vibrant work environment that creates an agency-like atmosphere and supports presence, transparency, and communication.

The Ringo Star by Lightnet defines an area for quiet work as well as focused team and meeting situations, creating a clear, focused lighting atmosphere. The Liquid Line is used as a track-mounted version in the conference room in a dynamic waveform. Complementing this, as in the foyer, the Basic luminaires with their round, minimalist form and the Midpoint spotlights, both mounted on track systems, ensure calm, even lighting of the adjacent communal and hallway areas.

“For us, sustainability begins with working within existing structures.” Andreas Jacob, brandherm + krumrey interior architecture

The design by bki consistently focuses on preserving the existing building fabric. Interventions are reduced to the bare minimum, and materials are selectively reused and supplemented. This results in a durable, resource-efficient solution with high design continuity. This approach is in line with Lightnet’s sustainability philosophy: flexible systems and durable lighting solutions that integrate seamlessly into existing architecture.
