At Decatur High School in Alabama, one geometric form appears again and again – yet never quite in the same way.
Across approximately 20,000 m², the school brings together very different spatial settings, from generously glazed circulation areas to tall open spaces and communal zones. Clear lines and large expanses of glass define much of the architecture, while strong color accents create distinctive moments throughout the building.
The lighting responds to these changing settings with one recurring geometry: the circle.
Ringo Star pendant luminaires appear throughout different areas of the school, changing in scale, arrangement, and suspension height depending on the space. Along the glazed circulation areas, individual rings in varying diameters introduce a softer geometry to the linear architecture. Suspended at different heights, they create a rhythm along the long sightlines without interrupting the openness of the space.
In the taller areas of the building, the same form takes on a different role. Several Ringo Star luminaires are arranged at different levels, creating compositions that extend into the open volume. The rings are no longer perceived only from below, but from different viewpoints as students move through the building.
The cafeteria offers another interpretation. Here, a large red ceiling feature becomes a defining architectural element. Three Ringo Star pendant luminaires echo its circular geometry below, translating the motif into light at different scales. Together, the ceiling, luminaires, and furnishings create a clear focal point within the open communal area.
The form remains the same, but its presence changes with each setting. Sometimes a single ring, sometimes a composition of several sizes and heights. In this way, Ringo Star becomes a recurring visual element that accompanies the architecture through very different parts of the school.
