Public libraries are knowledge brokers and at the same time play an integrative role in society. As local points of contact, they are centers of education, culture and information. The winner of the 2024 American Architecture Award lives up to these expectations: the branch of the Boston Public Library on Faneuil Street, designed by Ouden's Ello Architecture. The Art Deco building from 1931 was extended as part of a comprehensive renovation. The aim was to preserve its historical character while meeting modern requirements for accessibility and functionality. Expressive geometric details on the floor and ceiling, stucco and marble bring the lifestyle and glamorous spirit of the Art Deco period to life. The light-flooded interior makes visitors feel equally comfortable and at ease.
We are delighted to be part of the interior design with our Ringo Star series. The circular pendant luminaires continue the design history on the ceiling and compliment the dynamic language of Art Deco. The wide diameter enables uniform light that illuminates a wide area without competing with the outside light. This makes concentrated reading and working possible without having to compromise on aesthetics.
