The REWE Trakt X project by interior designers brandherm + krumrey was honored with the German Design Award 2026 as “Public Winner” in the category “Excellent Architecture – Interior Architecture.” With this award, the jury recognizes REWE Trakt X as a working environment that precisely translates contemporary forms of working and interaction into space. Particular emphasis was placed on the cultural added value that the project creates beyond pure functionality.
Nowadays, work no longer necessarily takes place in the office. This makes the moment when people physically come together all the more conscious. Spaces are taking on a new role: they structure exchange, provide orientation, and create conditions for concentration, dialogue, and collaborative thinking.
This is precisely where the interior design concept by brandherm + krumrey comes in. Covering around 480 square meters, an open-plan office has been transformed into a versatile training and event space where zoning, materiality, and light all play an equal role. Transparent structures allow for a shift between closeness and openness, while natural surfaces, carefully coordinated colors, and strategically placed lighting divide the space and make its use clear. The atmosphere here is created not by staging, but by a finely balanced harmony.
A linear lighting installation on the ceiling, created from the Matric series, replicates the eponymous X of Trakt X. Matric stages the interior design as a whole, emphasizing its structure and visually connecting the different zones. At the same time, the light provides a calm, even basic brightness. This is a crucial aspect in interior areas where daylight is only available to a limited extent. Light becomes a silent partner here: it aids orientation, reduces visual fatigue, and creates stable conditions for concentrated work and exchange throughout the day.
In addition, the project was honored with the Best of Year Award from the US magazine Interior Design in the Co-Working Office category.
